Baie Comeau at a Glance
On the banks of the Mancouagan River and St.
Lawrence River is Baie Comeau. Located about 400 km (250 mi) north of Quebec
City, this location is the home town of former Prime-Minister Brian Mulroney.
Founded in 1936, the town of over 20,000 people is a hub for logging in the
area, which is rich with natural wealth. Also, because of it's close relation
to the waters, hydroelectricity
is an important export of the area, with the Manicougan Reservoir dam producing
a huge quantity of power for Quebec
electrical grid. Visitors in town will be in awe of the natural wonders of the
area, and can learn about the wildlife at the Maison
de la Faune, or the Centre Boreal du St-Laurent, where they can receive
guided tours of the local hiking trails. Sports enthusiasts can watch the local
hockey team, the Baie-Comeau
Drakkar at the Centre
Henry-Leonard. And any trip to the area wouldn't be complete without exploring
the waters of the Saint-Lawrence River, the most important water way in Canada
and one the largest rivers in the world.
